Transport workers’ union supports Ramaphosa’s bid for presidency

The South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) has official announced its support for Cyril Ramaphosa to become African National Congress (ANC) president at the elective national conference in December.

The resolution was made a 14-member task team elected at its central executive committee (CEC) meeting on November 17 to run the affairs of the organisation until its elective national congress in February 2018.

The task team also resolved to support and lobby for its former general secretary, Randall Howard, to be elected as an additional member of the ANC NEC at the December conference.

The CEC elected the task team following general secretary Zenzo Mahlangu’s deportation to Zimbabwe in May and deputy general secretary Zacharia Mosothoane’s immediate resignation during the CEC meeting.

A five-member executive was also appointed to spearhead the union’s work. It comprises Limpopo’s Paul Nephawe as convener, Mpumalanga’s Nkoketso Sepogwane as deputy convener, Free State’s Jack Mazibuko as coordinator, Northern Cape’s Anele Kiet as deputy coordinator and Limpopo’s Kate Matlou as an administrator.

Other members of the task team include Western Cape’s Tembela Dakuse, Eastern Cape’s Zandile Pakati, Gauteng’s Alfred Thenjekwayo, KwaZulu-Natal’s Reginald Goba, North West’s Alpheus Phala, Eastern Cape’s Yandiswa Dayile, former deputy general secretary Johnson Gamede, Howard and Cosatu deputy general secretary Solly Phetoe.

The task team also “noted” the Labour Court ruling on 22 November, that Mahlangu could no longer be general secretary of Satawu and resolved to comply with the court order.

The structure also reiterated the CEC’s acceptance of Mosothoane’s resignation, and confirmed that he could no longer act on behalf Satawu in any capacity be it dealing with members, employers, staff or any other stakeholders.
