Three suspects accused of public violence at Moses Mabhida Stadium granted bail

Three suspects accused of public violence at Moses Mabhida Stadium during the semifinal of the Nedbank Cup Final on April 21 were released on bail of R1 000 each at the Durban Magistrates’ Court today, pending their next court appearance.

The three, Siphosenkosi Knowledge Memela, 35, John Sibongiseni Khumalo, 29, and Khwezilomso Madiba, 35, appeared at the court this morning on charges of public violence.

In terms of their bail conditions, they are not allowed to attend any other sporting events. The case has been remanded to May 25, 2018.

All three accused indicated to the court that they intend pleading guilty.

The three suspects, a 35-year-old truck driver, 29-year-old taxi rank manager and a 35-year-old taxi owner, were arrested on Tuesday.

Violence erupted at Moses Mabhida Stadium soon after Kaizer Chiefs lost 2 – 0 in the semifinal match of the Nedbank Cup to Free State Stars. The violence left many people injured and property damaged. A male security personnel was severely beaten by soccer fans.

In a statement, KZN SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said police were still appealing to people who were injured during the violence that unfolded at the stadium to come forward and provide investigators with a statement.

“Many of those that were injured left after receiving medical attention, and did not leave their contact details behind with police,” Naicker said.

Police are also appealing to witnesses to come forward and provide police with information on the perpetrators of the violence and destruction of property that was witnessed on that day.

“An appeal is made to all members of the public who can assist the police in their investigations to urgently contact Captain Reddy 082 458 5630 or Detective Warrant Officer Mlungwana 082 662 7764. All information will be treated with the strictest confidence,” Naicker said.
