Alert Butterworth police have arrested two women aged 32 and 33 and a 30-year-old man for possession of suspected stolen property, including baby food worth about R32,000, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

The three were arrested on Saturday after they allegedly stole chocolates from a local garage in Butterworth, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

Police officers then searched their car and found more suspected stolen property – tins of baby milk to the value of R32,000. The suspects were believed to have stolen the tins of baby milk in Port Elizabeth, East London, and King William’s Town. They were on their way to Mthatha but got no further than Butterworth, Manatha said.

In a separate incident on Saturday night, Msobomvu police arrested a 28-year-old man for possession of a suspected stolen car, he said.

The man was arrested at about 11pm on Saturday at Blue Sky village, Butterworth. The sedan car had been stolen in Cape Town. The man would appear in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.

He would later also appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on a charge of theft of a motor vehicle, Manatha said.
