It took the Guptas more than 19 months to settle a bill for a wedding that took place in 2013 at Sun City’s Palace Hotel.
The amaBhungane and Scorpio investigative centres on Tuesday reported on more leaked emails that reveal the rich family’s refusal to settle aspects of their hefty bill.
According to reports, the bill was initially delayed by a substantial amount of operating equipment that was not returned, as indicated in an email sent by former Sun City CEO Richard Hawkins.
On the list of special requests by the Guptas was the use of fireworks, ice rigs, horses, a waiter for every 10 guests and a complimentary laundry service. More than 230 rooms were booked for the wedding alone. Although the wedding went smoothly, what happened after the bash was a different story.
Sahara CEO Ashu Chawla and his team faced an R8 million bill, which covered venue hire and incidentals. But that was the beginning of a legal battle on both sides.
The Guptas made a further payment of R1 million months later, but the Gupta staff were still fighting over the amounts claimed by Sun City in 2014, which is the last time the matter appeared in the leaked emails.
