Survey reveals fewer young people optimistic of building good careers in SA

As the country marks Youth Day on June 16, it seems that, compared to five years ago, there are less young people this year who are positive about the prospects for their careers, according to the annual Gordon Institute of Business Science (Gibs) Youth Survey.

There were 2 500 grade 11 and 12 pupils polled for the survey.

TimesLIVE reports that the survey showed only 53% of the respondents looked to the country as a place to build their careers compared to 74% of pupils five years ago – consequences of political fighting, ratings downgrades and unemployment.

The pupils in the survey reportedly also largely did not believe that their schooling would prepare them for their futures, with 56% believing it did, but 64% did have faith that tertiary education would prepare them.
