Standard Bank hit by robbers

An estimated R6 740 000 was stolen during an alleged armed robbery at a bank in Zandspruit this past weekend, Roodepoort Northsider reports.

Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan told Northsider that the incident occurred at the Standard Bank in Zandspruit Value Centre, a small shopping centre in the area, near the Peter and Beyers Naude Roads intersection, at 12.33pm.

He confirmed that two people entered the bank pretending to be clients. One requested to see the bank manager.

“The manager attended to the ‘client’, who showed him a firearm on his waist that was covered by a jacket, and instructed him to go to the ATM room,” Muthan unpacked the ordeal.

He said after being escorted to the ATM room, the manager and another bank employee, who was loading money into the ATM, were tied up with a sealing tape.

Muthan added the robbers also took a cellphone before fleeing the scene in a white sedan without number plates.

No shots were fired, and no arrests have not been reported yet.
