Motorist clocks 250km/h in new set of wheels

He was detained at the Olifantsfontein Police Station and charged with reckless and negligent driving.

A 27-year-old man on his way from Limpopo to Tembisa in his brand new Ford Focus RS was locked up on Sunday morning for clocking 250km/h, reports the Kempton Express.

With him in the car were two male passengers.

According to Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng, the speed operation was conducted between 4am and 10am in both directions of the R21 at the Olifantsfontein on- and offramps.

“The lawbreaker never cited any reason for speeding excessively. He was detained at Olifantsfontein Police Station and charged with reckless and negligent driving,” Mokheseng said.

Five more offenders, which included a tipsy 39-year-old male driving a Mercedes-Benz sedan at 192km/h, were apprehended at the same location. Other lawbreakers registered speeds of 167km/h, 168km/h, 172km/h and 189km/h.

All suspects were charged with reckless and negligent driving, including driving while under the influence of alcohol. They were later released on R1 500 bail each, and will appear in Tembisa Magistrates’ Court.
