ANC mourns after Sisulu grandson dies of Covid complications

The ANC on Monday said it had learned with “shock and sadness” about the death of Moyikwa Sisulu, the grandson of anti-apartheid struggle stalwarts Walter and Albertina Sisulu.

Sisulu, 41, died of Covid-related complications on Saturday at Johannesburg’s Morningside Clinic.

It is understood that he and his partner, Aisha Jackson, were diagnosed with Covid-19 earlier this month after the birth of their baby.

ANC national spokesperson Pule Mabe said in a statement the governing party had lost a loyal and disciplined servant.

“Comrade Moyikwa was the eldest son of the late comrade Zwelakhe Sisulu and Zodwa Sisulu, and the grandson of Walter and Mama Albertina Sisulu. However, he was an ANC cadre and revolutionary in his own right.

“Comrade Moyikwa was an astute businessman with interests in mining, media, property and other commercial endeavours,” Mabe said.

Mabe said as a businessman and entrepreneur, Sisulu would be remembered for his generosity and integrity.

“Death has robbed the people of South Africa of one of its finest sons who was dedicated to economic transformation and the reconstruction and development of our country.

“We salute him for his unwavering and steadfast commitment to serve his nation.

“The ANC conveys its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, business associates and the entire mass democratic movement. We hope they will find solace in the knowledge that the entire nation shares in their grief. We wish them strength and fortitude as they mourn their loved one.”

Drive-through memorial

According to the Sisulu family, Moyikwa will be laid to rest this week in a private ceremony that will be live streamed. 

“Owing to Covid-19 restrictions there will be no daily home visits, prayers or vigils,” the family said in a statement.

“Just as we are completely devastated by this loss, we deeply appreciate the shock felt by his many friends and colleagues. Unfortunately, our new reality robs us of the chance to receive your comfort in person.”

The family said for those who would like to honour Moyikwa’s memory, there would be a drive-through memorial on Tuesday in Sandton where flowers and messages of condolence could be dropped off.
