Severe thunderstorms expected in Gauteng today

The SA Weather Service has warned citizens to prepare for severe thunderstorms in Johannesburg and across the country.

“Severe thunderstorms are expected in places over the eastern parts of North West, eastern parts of the Free State, northern and central parts of KwaZulu-Natal, in places in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga,” it said.

The heavy rainfall and light snowfall would only reach the coastal provinces on Tuesday.

“Heavy rain is expected in the eastern coastal areas of the Eden District of the Western Cape in the morning and the eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, spreading to the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday,” it said in a statement.

The coastal provinces should only expect very cold conditions on Monday.

“Very cold conditions are expected over the high lying areas of the Eastern Cape and south-eastern Northern Cape on Monday spreading to the south-western high lying areas of KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.”

Storm Report SA also confirmed the snowfall expected to hit the Eastern Cape on Monday afternoon.

“Snowfall is expected to start around midday over the Eastern Cape (shown on the map) and then on to the southern Drakensberg by Monday evening. We expect the snowfall to continue through Monday night and into Tuesday with the most snow falling Tuesday evening over the Eastern Drakensberg where up to 40 cm of snow is expected. Snowfall is expected to end late Tuesday night.

“This is due to a cut off low expected over SA on Monday,” it said.
