SCA to hand down judgment in spy tapes saga on Friday
The president’s lawyers want to make fresh representations to head of the NPA.
The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in Bloemfontein on Friday is expected to hand down judgment in the appeal by President Jacob Zuma and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) into the so-called spy tapes saga.
In April last year, the North Gauteng High Court ruled that the decision in 2009 by former acting NPA head Mokotedi Mpshe to drop more than 783 charges of alleged corruption against Zuma, stemming from the 1999 multibillion-rand arms deal scandal, should be overturned.
Last month, after a protracted legal wrangle that lasted almost a decade, Zuma’s legal team and the NPA conceded with the high court that the decision to discontinue his prosecution based on claims of political meddling in the case was “irrational”.
Advocate Kemp J Kemp, for Zuma, said his client wanted the opportunity to make fresh representations to national director of public prosecutions Shaun Abrahams.
Judgement in the matter was reserved.
