Santaco threatens national strike if renegotiation with SA Taxi Finance unsuccessful

This follows Thursdays taxi operator strike in Gauteng which the provincial government said negatively impacted the economy.

The Gauteng Community Safety MEC has said they would not engage the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) on permission for another march.

This is reported by EWN who further quoted the MEC, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane as saying Santaco could not be trusted.

This is following the Gauteng taxi operator strike on Thursday which caused huge traffic delays on many main routes in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

It was reported on Friday that the Gauteng government said the strike negatively impacted the economy.

However, the president of Santaco, Phillip Taaibosch, reportedly said they would hold a national strike on July 12 if talks on the financing of Toyota Quantum minibus taxis were not successful.

On Thursday, the SA Taxi Finance’s reduced interest on the financing of Toyota Quantum minibus taxis was rejected by most of the Santaco aligned taxi owners, according to a report by TimesLIVE.

The offer was that the interest on financing the vehicles be reduced by 3%.
