Sam Meyiwa ‘corners’ Mbalula, asks him about Senzo murder case

A picture of former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa’s father, Samuel Meyiwa, speaking to Police Minister Fikile Mbalula on Friday in KwaZulu-Natal has been circulating on social media.

In the picture, Meyiwa is seen talking to the minister, showing him documents as the minister looks on.

According to  Twitter user S’thembile Cele who shared the picture, Meyiwa apparently cornered the police minister and pleaded with him to update him about the progress made into the investigation of his son’s murder.

The picture left social media users also pleading with the minister to find Senzo’s killers.

Meyiwa was shot dead during an alleged armed robbery at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus in October 2014.

After almost three years, no suspect has been arrested in connection with his murder.

Mbalula earlier this year promised that the police would soon crack the Meyiwa case.

“It is one of my priorities to crack this case with the team. I’m very positive we’ll make arrests, but I don’t want to tip them [the killers] off by divulging the plans we are going to use,” Mbalula was quoted as saying by IOL.

However, private investigator Rick Crouch told the publication the investigation into Senzo’s murder could be described as a “cold case”.

Crouch said a cold case arises when an investigation yields no results because of a lack of sufficient evidence.

“Police have got nothing in their investigation,” said Crouch, a certified criminal investigator and a certified computer forensic examiner.

“With murder cases you generally have a 48-hour window to develop your leads. After the first 48 hours every hour that goes by without leads generated or a suspect in custody makes it less likely that the case will be solved,” he was quoted as saying by the publication.

People have since been harassing singer Kelly Khumalo on social media asking her to detail exactly what happened that fateful night.

After years of silence, she spoke out about the murder during her Up Close and Personal with Kelly Khumalo concert in Johannesburg last month.

She said she, Meyiwa and friends went to her mother’s place for Sunday lunch in Vosloorus on October 26, 2014.

“It was a great day. We were having a great day. Just as we were about to leave, there was a bang at the door and the door open3e and two guys walked in. One pointed a gun at me, demanded money and cellphones and I ran to my sister’s room. He followed me, I pushed the door, trying to close it, he pushed back and I pushed again.

“Until today I do not know why he gave up on pushing but he did for some reason,” she said.

Khumalo said while she was trying to run for her life she forgot about her children.

“Later on I realised that my children were in the house. When I opened the door my mom, Senzo and his friends were fighting the intruders. My son watched it all happen,” she said.

She said during the scuffle she heard two gunshots and immediately went to the other room to check her son.

“Then Senzo ran into my hands. I thought he was trying to protect me from the intruders but he had blood on his chest and back; that’s when I knew he had been shot.

“We couldn’t even wait for the ambulance to arrive. We rushed him to hospital. I did everything I could. I didn’t want him to think I gave up on him,” she said, sobbing.

Meyiwa was a Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain and one of the most beloved soccer players in the country.

His killers are still at large.
