The SABC fired popular Lotus FM presenter and columnist Ravi Govender yesterday, after he called President Jacob Zuma a “zombie”.
SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed to News24 Govender’s contract was terminated because he had put the public broadcaster into disrepute for his comments on social media last Friday following Zuma’s opening address to the ANC’s 5th national policy conference, which is currently underway at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.
Govender stated in a Facebook post that was later deleted: “Just heard a Zombie Zuma giving a speech on the news. Massacring the beautiful English language. Uneducated creature. Even the other moron Mugabe speaks much better.”
Though Govender apologised for his statement and said he made the remarks out of anger and wasn’t a racist, Zuma’s eldest son, Edward, threatened to take up the matter to the Equality Court and also lodge a complaint with Lotus FM’s management.
Kganyago said Govender would immediately stop work at the radio station. He hosted the popular Vinyl Countdown show on Fridays from 19:00 to 21:00.
