Joburg City Power was inundated with Twitter messages from angry residents who woke up to cold weather and power outages in parts of Roodepoort.
The residents’ outcry was that they were not informed in time about the power outages in areas such as Weltevreden Park, Discovery, Constantia Kloof, Ontdekkerspark, Honeydew, Laser Park, Horizon View, Wilgeheuwel, Strubens Valley, Ruimsig, Helderkruin, Roodekrans and Ramosa.
Based on comments on Twitter, it seemed the power outage had spiralled to Radiokop, Allens Nek, Kloofendal and Little Falls.
The power outage started at about 6am, but City Power was accused of placing a notice on Twitter only after 10am.
The notice said residents would be without power from 6am to 2pm due to essential maintenance on the City Power network.
Some residents felt communication was lacking and complained that they should have been notified days before any power interruptions.
Replying to City Power on Twitter, Mark @mch080 said: “Is this a joke? A warning for 6am posted after 10. It excludes Radiokop and Allens Nek yet we are also affected.”
City Power responded: “This was just a reminder. This was posted on the 24th of May and before that please check our timeline.”
Dimitri Pappas @fragtion commented: “It is a planned outage – they issued a notice earlier in the week. How most people are supposed to see the notices though is another story.”
Victoria Cave @Vicky_Cav3 commented: “Allens Nek?? We have kids to feed! Start paying for our takeaways that we have to get seeing as we pay for electricity that we DONT get!!”
Another resident, Fati @fatims9 chipped in: “We in Radiokop not on ur list but power went out at 6:25am…” But a Honeydew resident differed from the majority and thanked City Power for notifying her about the cut on time.
