Rhodes University appoints first black woman registrar in its 113-year history

For the first time in its 113-year existence, Grahamstown’s Rhodes University has appointed a black woman to the position of registrar. Dr Adele Moodly started in her new position in October 2017.

Having held a number of senior leadership positions in more than 20 years spent in the higher education sector, Moodly brings with her a wealth of academic, leadership and managerial experience.

An Old Rhodian, Moodly has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Psychology and a Higher Diploma in Education from Rhodes University. She also holds a Master’s degree in Education from the University of South Africa (Unisa), where she also completed her doctor of education qualification in 2001. In 2005, she completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the Netherlands Business School (BSN).

In her most recent position, as deputy dean at the University of Fort Hare, Dr Moodly’s responsibilities included strategic planning and management, operational management, enrollment planning and human resources management.

“Dr Moodly’s appointment comes at the time when Rhodes is aggressively pursuing transformation, reviewing progress in transforming the institution and reflecting on what still needs to be done. Our transformation agenda, in part, seeks to address the historical imbalance in the representation of women and black people on our executive structure,” vice-chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela said.

Moodly succeeds Rhodes’ long-serving registrar, Dr Stephen Fourie, who retires after more than 20 years in the position.
