Rhodes awards honorary doctorate to Reverend Barney Pityana

Staunch critic of President Jacob Zuma and post-apartheid chairperson of the SA Human Rights Commission Barney Pityana will be awarded on honorary doctorate in law from Rhodes University.

The ceremony will take place on 22 April.

Pityana, an Anglican reverend, who was also vice-chancellor of the University of South Africa until 2010, has often taken Zuma to task for his leadership of the ANC and for criticising the church.

Zuma said in a speech last year that church leaders should not get involved in politics and not criticise him or the ANC.

Pityana responded that Zuma had enough enemies and didn’t want to make the church another one.

This was but one of the many swipes over the years that Pityana made against the statesman.
