Qedani Mahlangu only available to testify in January

The former MEC only finishes her studies at the University of Bedfordshire on January 15, and will only be available to testify then.

Former Gauteng MEC for health Qedani Mahlangu will testify in January 2018, her legal representatives told the Life Esidimeni hearing on Friday.

“Our client is registered for a Master’s of business administration at the University of Bedfordshire in London,” said her legal representative.

“In regard to the question relating to our client’s suspension at the university, we are of the view that the suspension was both wrongful and unlawful, and we’re taking step to have it revoked and if necessary, reviewed. That is why notwithstanding that suspension, she only available from the 15th when she finishes the module on the 15th of January next year. Therefore the dates that would have been suggested would have been agreed upon.”

The university earlier this week announced it had suspended Mahlangu from her studies at the Global Banking School because of the “severity of the allegations” against her.

University spokesperson Ulrika Meegolla informed The Citizen the information published that she was studying for an MBA at the University of Bedfordshire was, as a matter of fact, incorrect.

Her lawyer said she graduated with an MBA from a different university in the UK and was now registered for a full-time MBA with the University of Bedfordshire.

However, her representatives said the suspension was unlawful, and would seek to have it reviewed.

Sharing his thoughts on the matter, EFF leader Julius Malema said he suspected Mahlangu was advised to delay her appearance until after the ANC conference in December in fear that her testimony would ruin Gauteng ANC’s image.
