Pravin Gordhan: Zuma must step aside and let someone else lead

Gordhan says state capture is a fact and South Africans must stop ducking around the issue, as there is enough evidence in the public domain.

ANC MP and former finance minister Pravin Gordhan on Tuesday called on President Jacob Zuma to step down and let someone else run the country.

“I think that the president should move aside and let somebody take over this country and reset the course so that we can fulfill the kind of aspirations that Mandela and his generation had for South Africa,” Gordhan said.

He was speaking at Lilliesleaf Farm in Rivonia, northern Johannesburg, during a panel discussion on former president Nelson Mandela’s legacy and the country’s negotiated political settlement to a constitutional democracy in the early 1990s.

Gordhan said there was sufficient evidence of state capture, and he lamented the reluctance by law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute politicians and state officials implicated in wide-scale corruption.

He said people like fired SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) CEO Thokozani Magwaza, whose contract was terminated on Tuesday, were being chased out of their positions, while officials guilty of corruption were getting off scot-free without any consequences.

“State capture is a fact we must stop ducking around, it’s a fact, those who are named in various sources don’t require any more evidence to be presented to the public or wherever,” he said.

“I know we are a country that is run by the rule of law and the constitution, so there are some formal process we need to get through, but state capture is actually telling us those who are responsible for bringing people to book are the very ones who refuse to do it, they rather chase some innocent people.”
