Will ANC ever reveal candidates with elections set to proceed?

The ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) held a special meeting on Friday, followed by a three-day virtual lekgotla from Saturday to Monday.

The ANC had hoped for additional time to submit their candidate lists after missing the initial deadline. In a bid to force the IEC to re-open submissions, the party withdrew its application.

ANC’s NEC agenda

The party’s national spokesperson Pule Mabe on Friday said points on the agenda would include the local government elections and the party’s financial woes.

As reported earlier, the ANC had been unable to pay its staff since July 2021. The governing party also allegedly owes more than R100 million in taxes to the South African Revenue Service (Sars).

The ANC had also not paid the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), despite taking deductions from employees. Mabe said other points of discussion included the pandemic and climate change.

ANC’s mayoral candidates

The ANC didn’t confirm when they would make their mayoral candidate list available but spoke to the ongoing process of interviewing candidates who meet the criteria.

In addition, the party called on government to implement “more rigorous” processes and criteria for selecting candidates for important managerial positions.

Having said that, the ANC highlighted the lack of resources and the impact of the pandemic on their ability to select suitable candidates.

“We must ensure we use technology and other innovative methods that will reach millions of members and supporters in safe and dynamic ways, in line with Covid-19 regulations”, Mabe said.
