In video footage sent to The Citizen on Thursday, violent and chaotic scenes can be witnessed playing out in the Metsimaholo council (Sasolburg) in the Free State on Wednesday.
According to the EFF’s Lucas Mokoena, EFF councillors were allegedly assaulted by security guards the EFF has referred to as “bouncers”, allegedly at the request of the speaker of Metsimaholo when they questioned the presence of the men in their council sitting.
They apparently also asked where the funds would come from to pay them. In the footage you can see the EFF resisting an apparent attempt to remove them in a scene that echoes previous years in which EFF MPs faced violent evictions in parliament when they stood in opposition to the presidency of Jacob Zuma.
The council has not yet issued a statement on what occurred.
