State-owned pharmaceutical company in the works?

According to one of the findings published in a report after the Presidential Health Summit, a state-owned pharmaceutical company could be in the works.

Business Tech reports that this would be done in a bid to “de-commodify essential medicine supply to meet patient and national fiscal imperatives”.

According to the publication, the establishment of such an entity would form a key part of the government’s transition to the National Health Insurance (NHI) system.

Though it is yet to be established, President Cyril Ramaphosa recently stated that the NHI bill was in its final stages and would soon be heading to parliament for submission.
