Report: ANC Integrity Commission recommends ‘problematic candidates’ be removed from parliament list

According to a report released by the ANC Integrity Commission, they recommend the 22 people flagged as “problematic candidates” be removed from the party’s parliament list.

The report says the commission recommends the 22 people it has mentioned to be removed from parliament list. However there’s 23 people on the list with Mabuza being the last one.

It’s alleged that DD was initially not supposed to be on the list but it could be an error.

According to The Sowetan, commission chairperson George Mashamba gave a scathing review of senior party leaders who ignored the party’s 2017 Nasrec elective conference resolutions by failing to subject themselves to the commission.

The ANC’s NEC flagged 22 people on the party’s 2019 parliamentary candidates’ list as potentially being improper. This included Mabuza and the Minerals and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe. Both are also part of the ANC’s top six leaders. They are respectively the party’s deputy president and national chairman.

The report also calls for members who are facing corruption allegations to account for it or face disciplinary action.

Everyone else, including Nomvula Mokonyane, Mosebenzi Zwane, Gwede Mantashe among others are recommended to be removed from parliament list by virtue of them being mentioned in the commissions of inquiries.

“… what most disturbed the IC [commission] was that not one of the comrades accused publicly of corruption have respected the resolution of conference and accounted to the IC,” reads part of the report which has been seen by the publication.

The publication further states that the aforementioned flagged candidates have been categorised by the commission in different ways: according to those who have been found guilty by the Constitutional Court; those who have been mentioned in the commission of inquiry; and those facing court cases or been accused of corruption.

ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa and Mabuza are among those accused of engaging in corrupt practices while Mosebenzi Zwane, Supra Mahumapelo, Gwede Mantashe and Faith Muthambi have been implicated by one of the commissions of inquiry.

Among those who have constitutional judgments against them are Malusi Gigaba and Bathabile Dlamini.

“While we note that the allegations of corruption differ, we have categorised them accordingly, and are recommending that the following 22 comrades be removed from the national legislature list,” recommends the report.

There are allegations that there was a deliberate delay in alerting the 22 candidates to their inclusion in the commission’s list in an effort to derail their being able to clear their names prior to being sworn in as members of parliament.

Most of the candidates were appeared before the commission between Sunday and Tuesday in an effort to do this prior to the report being released.

According to City Press, Mabuza requested to expedite his meeting with the integrity commission and rescheduled it for Friday to plead his case in time to be sworn in as deputy, which happened yesterday despite the fact that the commission had not released their final report.

“I don’t know where they [The Sowetan] get that report,” said Mabe when contacted for comment.
