Put crèche ‘teacher from hell’ on child protection register – parly

The teacher should never be allowed to work with kids again, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Social Development said.

The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Social Development has asked for the “teacher from hell” who was filmed beating and abusing children in an illegal crèche in Carletonville in Gauteng to be placed on the national child protection register so that she could “never again be allowed to work with children”.

Committee chairperson, Zoleka Capa, today condemned the teacher who was shown on social media this week heavily slapping children in their faces and on their heads, beating one with a scrubbing brush, pulling and throwing another to the concrete floor, and kicking and forcing two of the little children to clean up after they vomited or spilled liquid at the creche. The video trended on social media and even made the main news story on SABC news on Thursday evening.

The teacher was arrested, appeared in the Carletonville magistrates’ court and released on bail.

Capa said the educator must be placed on the child protection register and never allowed to work with kids again. The register contained a record of all the reports of abuse or deliberate neglect of a child, and all convictions of all persons on charges involving the abuse or deliberate neglect of a child. It also had all findings by a children’s court that a child was in need of care and protection because of the abuse and deliberate neglect of the child.

“The committee calls on government to work with law enforcement agencies to monitor all facilities that take care of children to ensure that this kind of abuse does not happen at these facilities, and that child protection is prioritised. The committee commends members of the public that highlighted the abuse on social media, which led to the authorities acting swiftly on this matter,” Capa said.

The committee chairperson urged South Africans to report this type of behaviour immediately when it happens, to avoid the trauma that is brought on by abuse.
