David Makhura has once again been elected premier of Gauteng in the provincial legislature on Wednesday.
Makhura received 38 votes while Msimanga received 32 at the sitting, presided over by Judge Dustin Mlambo.
The ANC received a total of 37 seats in the province, meaning that he received one vote from someone outside of his own party.
The DA’s Msimanga received 32 votes. The DA has 20 seats in parliament, meaning he received 12 votes from outside his own party.
ANC Gauteng deputy chairperson Panyaza Lesufi said before nominating Makhura: “It is my great honour to nominate a dedicated leader of our movement and a servant of our people.”
The ANC retained their majority in Gauteng narrowly, managing 50.19% in a result that saw them narrowly avoiding the possibility of being ousted from the province’s local government by a possible opposition coalition.
This made Makhura’s election as premier slightly less predictable than the election of the premier in the other provinces – all of which saw the ANC garner a more solid majority, apart from the traditional DA stronghold of the Western Cape, where the official opposition party achieved 55.45% of the vote and their premier candidate Alan Winde was voted in as premier.

Apart from Winde, all other premiers voted in so far are, as expected, from the ANC.
Zamani Saul was voted in as Northern Cape premier, Sefora Ntombela won in the Free State, Job Mokgoro was chosen in the North West, Oscar Mabuyane won in the Eastern Cape, and Sihle Zikalala emerged victorious in KwaZulu-Natal.
