Limpopo ANC postpones meetings of three regions as infections soar

The ANC in Limpopo has put on hold the elective conference of three regions due to escalating infections of the Covid
delta variant in the province.

“This disease is extremely dangerous and we cannot cope,” said Limpopo ANC deputy provincial secretary Basikopo Makamu yesterday.

“We have also taken a resolution to put our roadmap to elective conferences on hold. We are doing this in accordance with Covid-19 regulations which forbid public gatherings, including religious and political gatherings, during lockdown.”

The province had planned that three regions – Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Peter Mokaba – would hold elective conferences before the end of winter.

The fourth region, Norman Mashabane, which is the biggest in the province in terms of membership, held a successful conference in June.

Makamu said the conferences would resume once the infection rate dropped.

On Sunday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said during his update on the fast-spreading delta variant the country was experiencing a third wave that was more severe than the first and second waves.

“For the last two weeks, the country has consistently recorded an average of nearly 20 000 new cases daily,” said
Ramaphosa.

“At present, the country has over 200 000 active Covid-19 cases. In the last two weeks, over 4 200 South Africans have lost their lives to Covid.

“While Gauteng accounts for more than half of new infections, infections are rapidly increasing in places like the Western Cape, Limpopo, North West, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.”
