Job Mokgoro finally resigns as North West MPL

Former embattled North West premier Job Mokgoro has formally resigned as a member of the provincial legislature (MPL).

Mokgoro was meant to step down from both his roles as the premier and MPL of the North West after the ANC’s interim provincial committee (IPC) recalled him from office last week.

But Mokgoro only resigned as the premier and caused uncertainty regarding his replacement – ANC veteran Bushy Maape – who was expected to take over his seat in the legislature.

As a result of this, North West finance MEC Motlalepula Rosho was sworn in on Thursday as the acting premier.

Mokgoro on Wednesday met with President Cyril Ramaphosa before he tendered his resignation letter as premier to the speaker of the North West provincial legislature.

He has been at loggerheads with the IPC for some time after being accused of undermining its renewal agenda and efforts to restore stability in the province. However, Mokgoro has denied this saying he had improved the lives of the province’s residents and addressed service delivery challenges.

Mokgoro was appointed the premier of the North West in 2018 to replace former ANC provincial chair, Supra Mahumapelo.
