‘I will not accept it’: ‘Angry’ Niehaus vows to fight his expulsion from the ANC

Carl Niehaus said he has appealed the decision and is thus still a member of the ANC.

Suspended uMkhonto we Sizwe Military Veteran’s Association (MKMVA) spokesperson Carl Niehaus said he will fight his expulsion from the African National Congress (ANC).

Niehaus booted from ANC

This comes after the party’s national disciplinary committee (NDC) on Monday said Niehaus had been expelled from the ANC.

The ANC said this was related to comments made in June and July 2021, which brought the party “into disrepute”.

Niehaus, however, is not taking his expulsion lying down.

‘I am very angry’

He said the NDC’s letter was disrespectful and unconstitutional.

The ANC “leaked that letter to social media before they paid me the bit of respect of sending that letter to me first”, he told The Citizen’s Getrude Makhafola.

“Secondly, ask them how they as a national disciplinary committee are actually continuing with the charges against me, which are older than a year, which is unconstitutional in terms of the ANC’s constitution.”

Appealing the NDC’s decision

Niehaus said he was appealing his expulsion.

“I’ve instructed [ANC veteran] Mathews Phosa that he must immediately file an appeal.

“I am very angry and I’m going to fight this to the hilt.

“It’s unacceptable. I will not accept it. I’m still a member of the ANC.

“I will immediately appeal and I will fight this decision all the way, step by step.”

Niehaus then took to Twitter to announce that he had already appealed the decision.

He said due to his appeal, his expulsion is suspended and he is still a member of the ANC.

Charges

The NDC report listed six transgressions which led to Niehaus’ expulsion.

Most of them related to comments he had made against the ANC and in defence of his long-time ally Jacob Zuma.

The ANC accused him of bringing the party into disrepute.

Niehaus has repeatedly criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa and his expulsion comes days before the ANC’s 55th national elective conference in Nasrec, which starts on 16 December.
