Gauteng reduces ID collection backlog

More than 30,000 identity documents have been collected in four days from Gauteng home affairs offices following a drive by the department, reports Pretoria North Rekord.

In less than a week, the department reduced the backlog from 90,000 uncollected documents to 55,000, according to Home Affairs Minister Siyabonga Cwele.

Cwele said during a visit to the Ga-Rankuwa home affairs office: “Progress is being made in reducing the number of uncollected IDs across the country, particularly in Gauteng. In the first four days of this week, the number of uncollected IDs in Gauteng was reduced to 55,000, from [the] 90,000 of last week.”

Cwele was monitoring service delivery and assessing the office’s readiness to assist citizens who might want to visit home affairs over the voter registration weekend.

“It is clear that we can indeed grow South Africa when we work together. The response from citizens has been tremendous.

“I am happy that so many people came to our offices to collect their IDs,” said Cwele, who also handed over two smart ID cards to senior citizens, Matsebe Johannes Masemola and Mapula Christina Malongoane, who came to collect their IDs at the Ga-Rankuwa office.
