ANC55: ‘I am going to win,’ says confident Nomvula Mokonyane

ANC national executive committee (NEC) member Nomvula Mokonyane is adamant that she will win and emerge as deputy secretary-general at the party’s elective conference at Nasrec.

“I am going to win. I am contesting like Cyril Ramaphosa and everyone else, let’s leave that in the hands of the delegates. I also got my choice, and my choice is to be elected here,” she said on the sidelines of the conference on Saturday.

She received 1 779 branch nominations, while ANC general manager Fébé Potgieter-Gqubule garnered 905. A mooted plan to create a second deputy secretary-general position could see a third candidate nominated from the floor.

Mokonyane wouldn’t divulge her choice for ANC presidency, which is being contested by incumbent Ramaphosa and ex-minister Zweli Mkhize.

No unregistered delegates

Despite complaints from delegates still to be registered for the much-delayed conference, Mokonyane said no one has been left out.

The conference was yet to adopt credentials by Saturday afternoon. Media reports showed that there were still unregistered delegates at the UNISA accreditation centre in Ormonde.

There were also reports that tags belonging to some Free State delegates went missing.

Mokonyane said all glitches have been resolved.

“All issues were attended to, we are now dealing with everyone keen to be part of the conference as non-voting delegates.

“There are no unregistered delegates,” she said.

She added that there was no such a thing as “100%” registration, and that some were not able to make it to the conference.

“You get some attending to bereavements or illness and do not make it, That’s now what we are dealing with over and above the Free State matter.”
