The ANC has sent their parliament list of candidates to their integrity commission for further vetting, a clear indication that the party is considering removing some of the controversial names.
Mounting pressure from within the party and supporters appears to have planted a seed for the party to consider going back to the drawing board regarding their parliamentary list.
The party met on Monday in an urgent National Executive Committee meeting to discuss the list. The party on Tuesday announced that they had taken a step to have the integrity commission ensure that they reflected the party’s ethos of “spirit-renewal and integrity”.
At the NEC meeting, President Cyril Ramaphosa allegedly told members that voters were questioning the list, Sowetan reports.
The party’s list, which was publicised last month, has received hefty criticism with some party members demanding for those implicated to step aside.
Those implicated include former home affairs minister Malusi Gigaba, Environmental Affairs Minister Nomvula Mokonyane, Women Affairs Minister Bathabile Dlamini, and Communications Minister Faith Muthambi, among others.
The integrity commission comprises party veterans who have the power to recommend action on those found guilty.
ANC spokesperson Dakota Legoete confirmed Monday’s meeting and that the party’s list featured in discussions.
The IEC published the list of candidates representing political parties contesting the national elections on Friday.
