Mxolisi Kaunda will be sworn as Durban’s new mayor in at a council meeting on Thursday. Kaunda was selected after his predecessor, Zandile Gumede, resigned.
The incoming mayor is expected to hit the ground running after being sworn in on Thursday as the ANC expects progress within the next three to six months.
Kaunda will have to ensure that the issues of cleaning streets and waste collection are dealt with at a rapid rate.
Meanwhile, axed eThekwini mayor Gumede found out about her redeployment via a text message, a source in her inner circle has said.
She had resigned and had to now withdraw her resignation after consultation, the insiders told News24.
Gumede was reportedly unaware of the decision by the ANC’s provincial executive committee (PEC) to redeploy her until she received a text telling her of her fate.
News24 spoke to two people in her inner circle who said she was appealing the decision with the National Executive Committee (NEC). This after the PEC announced she would be redeployed.
It is unclear where the ANC is planning to place her.
Gumede is known to still enjoy significant support in the eThekwini region, the ANC’s largest region in the country.
