ANC demands that Hawks investigate Winde, Grant

The ruling party alleges the premier candidate and three others were involved in destabilising the municipality as part of a plot against the ANC.

The ANC has demanded that the directorate for priority crime investigation (Hawks) takes over an investigation into allegations made against DA Western Cape premier candidate Alan Winde and his colleague, MEC Donald Grant.

According to the party, Winde, Grant and a former mayor of Bitou, Memory Booysen, were allegedly involved in destabilising the municipality as part of a plot to cause the ANC to lose power in Bitou.

“A young girl was shot and killed during the upheavals that were part of this campaign. Attempts were also made to cover up the involvement of Winde, Grant, and Booysen,” said the party in a statement.

ANC Western Cape provincial secretary Faiez Jacobs said in a statement: “We understand that a sedition docket was opened. However, crucial evidence disappeared from the docket, which has also disappeared. Amazingly, the police officer who did the investigation has allegedly resigned from SAPS.

“This officer opened a business as a private investigator and allegedly gets most of his work from DA municipalities. These are serious investigations that warrant an immediate and thorough investigation by the Hawks,” added Jacobs.

Jacobs went on to allege that unnamed DA members and Winde, in particular, were leading a relentless media attack against Major-General Jeremy Vearey.

According to him, this is because as deputy commissioner of crime detection in the Western Cape, General Vearey had asked that the allegations against Winde, Grant, and Booysen be followed up.

“I think that Winde is afraid that his ambitions to become premier will be destroyed if the allegations against him end up in court. It seems he wants to save himself by going after Vearey. To us, Vearey epitomises what it means to be good a police officer. Our advice to Winde is ‘hands off Vearey and get ready to answer allegations made against you’,” concluded Jacobs.

The DA is yet to respond to the allegations.
