Following news of the death of former ANC Youth League (ANCYL) secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa on Monday night, Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has vowed police will not rest until the councillor’s killers are found.
Taking to Twitter on Tuesday morning, Mbalula said he was lost for words after hearing about Magaqa’s sudden passing amid concerns over a string of political killings in KwaZulu-Natal.
Magaqa, 35, was a councillor at Umzimkhulu in southern KZN. He was rushed to hospital on July 13 after he was shot and wounded along with two other ANC councillors in what is thought to be an ambush by unknown people.
He had been in hospital before succumbing to the gunshot wounds.
Mbalula tweeted: “MAGAQA was shot a while ago, yesterday [Monday] he gave in we will NOT rest till we find your killers #RIPSindiso.”
Magaqa was the secretary-general of the ANCYL before it was disbanded in 2012 after its leadership, under then league president Julius Malema, was found guilty of bringing the ANC into disrepute by the party’s disciplinary committee.
Malema and the ANCYL’s former spokesperson, Floyd Shivambu, were expelled from the ANC, while Magaqa was suspended from the party.
In a statement on Tuesday, the EFF called for an end to political killings and offered its “deepest and heartfelt” condolences to Magaqa’s family and friends.
“The EFF takes this opportunity to call for an end to all political assassinations and killings. Political differences should never degenerate into violence because such will lead to our common ruin,” EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said.
“The EFF will continue to foster an environment for peaceful political engagement like has been the case since the formation of the organisation in 2013.”
