The office of North West premier Supra Mahumapelo on Saturday said it had received news about a plot to assassinate the premier.
In a statement, the premier’s spokesperson Brian Setswambung said a case of conspiracy to commit murder was opened at Mahikeng police station.
“The plot involves hiring hitmen who have already been paid R250 000 and are to be paid a balance after eliminating Mahumapelo,” Setswambung said.
“This is one of several attempts at killing Mahumapelo with the last one involving a councillor in Mahikeng.”
Claims of a possible plot to assassinate Mahumapelo come after a wave of violent protests erupted in North West last month, calling for the premier to resign by residents who have complained about service delivery failures and accused his administration of corruption.
The ANC’s top six officials have reportedly given Mahumapelo an ultimatum to step down or be removed from office.
This after the governing party’s national working committee this week recommended that the national officials meet with Mahumapelo to discuss options to resolve the ongoing impasse in North West.
