The Democratic Alliance was not impressed with former government spokesperson and new owner of ANN7 and The New Age Mzwanele Manyi after sharing a photoshopped image of the party’s leader, Mmusi Maimane, on Wednesday.
The image was initially shared on Facebook by a user who accused Maimane of being “an actor”.
“He even puts a toilet paper in his ear,” said the user.
Maimane visited Robben Island on Sunday, along with Phumzile van Damme, at the invitation of the Kathrada Foundation. In the image, Maimane is seen standing in the same position as former president Nelson Mandela when he visited the prison.
At the time, the president had a hearing aid in his left ear, so one was photoshopped on to Maimane’s left ear too, but Manyi shared it on social media as if it were real.
“Drama,” said Manyi, pointing at the image.
However, the DA saw the tweet and responded with the original image, which doesn’t have the toilet paper in his ear.
The image has, however, not stopped circulating on social media, with people saying the DA leader was trying to be Mandela for Halloween. He has also been accused of trying to be former US president Barack Obama in parliament.
These were some of the reactions on social media:
