Two opposing taxi associations whose identities are yet to be established have descended on Braamfontein in a dispute over routes in Soweto, said metro police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.
“I don’t yet know which taxi associations are involved, but the strike by the two associations is causing major traffic delays,” he said.
“They’re locked in disputes over taxi routes in Soweto and are making [their] way to the office of the MEC.”
Minnaar, has, however, indicated that officers have been deployed, citing that the blockade is largely affecting the busy Simmonds Street heading into Bree Street.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area due to heavy traffic congestion.
“Violence has not been reported, but you never know what might happen when taxis are involved,” said Minnaar.
