North West premier accused of ‘pushing’ President Khama off his own road

North West premier Supra Mahumapelo has reportedly caught the ire of Botswana’s President Ian Khama (pictured) after his convoy was allegedly forced off the road last week by a blue-light brigade transporting the premier during a visit to Gaborone, Sunday Times reports.

According to the report, on Wednesday Mahumapelo was rushing back to his home in Mahikeng after spending the day in Gaborone, which is two hours away, when his convoy of BMW sedans apparently pushed Khama and his escorts off the road.

It is reported that the incident has caused a diplomatic storm between Pretoria and Gaborone, with Botswana’s government officially lodging a complaint with the Department of International Relations and Co-operation (DIRCO).

Sources the paper spoke to with knowledge of the incident said Mahumapelo had been invited to Global Expo Botswana, a trade exhibition in the capital.

Brian Setswambung, the premier’s spokesperson, confirmed that the premier travelled to Gaborone this week, but did not comment on the incident.

The spokesperson for DIRCO did not respond to requests for comment, and neither did Botswana government spokesman Jeff Ramsay.
