Nomvula Mokonyane allegedly asked for vote recount at ANC conference

Various sources at Nasrec have this evening confirmed to The Citizen that there had been a delay in the announcement of the results due to an alleged recount.

It is understood that after all the top six votes were unsealed from boxes, counted and the final results conveyed to party agents and stalwarts, the NDZ camp questioned the integrity of the results for deputy president position.

The recount was reportedly required by Nomvula Mokonyane, a staunch supporter of Dlamini-Zuma.

Mokonyane had earlier during the week declined nomination as party treasurer after receiving 289 nominations from KwaZulu-Natal on the Dlamini-Zuma slate.

She said she declined nomination after reflecting on problems in the governing party and the “need for unity”. She told the media this afternoon that she will join those delegates who will be voting for Dlamini-Zuma to lead the ANC.

“My view was that let me also demonstrate commitment to unity within the ANC and decline nomination in public, you cannot have three people running for the same position. I think this will be a contribution others will never forget.”

The position of Treasuer General was eventually bagged by Mpumalanga ANC chairperson and Premier, David Mabuza.
