Murder accused just wanted to scare schoolgirl

A Lethlabile woman yesterday insisted it had never been her intention to kill the schoolgirl who was having an affair with her boyfriend and that she only wanted to douse her with petrol to scare her.

Cynthia Mosupi, 24, told the High Court in Pretoria she stood by her version that her love rival, schoolgirl Boitumelo Dlamini, had been set alight accidentally when someone lit a cigarette.

She also insisted that she had not kidnapped Dlamini and had only taken her to an open piece of veld and doused her with petrol to frighten her so that Dlamini would leave her boyfriend, who was the father of her child, alone.

She said she had seen her boyfriend and Dlamini together in a car days before the incident and her boyfriend’s cousin had confirmed an affair.

She said she and her cousin had formed the plan to scare Dlamini while partying a night earlier.

Mosupi and her friend Sharon Gugu Thwala have pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and murder ing Dlamini in June 2015.

She was allegedly kidnapped outside her school and taken to a deserted veld where she was doused with petrol and set alight.

A video of the gruesome incident, which showed Dlamini screaming in agony, was handed in as evidence in the case.

The trial continues.
