Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) national chairperson advocate Dali Mpofu seemingly came out in defence of the red berets’ second in command Floyd Shivambu following reports on Wednesday that Shivambu’s younger brother, Brian, received R16 million from VBS Mutual Bank.

The allegation that Brian Shivambu had pocketed R16 million from the bank surfaced in a report called The Great Bank Heist which looked at alleged looting of VBS Bank.

The report was compiled by advocate Terry Motau assisted by Werksmans Attorneys.

An investigative report published by the Daily Maverick reveals the alleged involvement at the very top of the EFF in benefiting from some of the lootings to the tune of nearly R2 billion from VBS Mutual Bank.

The Daily Maverick’s investigative unit has now revealed that as much as R10 million of this money may have been given to Shivambu by his younger brother, while R1.3 million went into the party’s bank account.

The money to Shivambu was allegedly funnelled to him through a company called Sgameka Projects.

In a series of tweets, Mpofu defends the EFFs deputy leader, questioning why the older Shivambu is being “charged for the deeds” of his relatives.

Mpofu tweeted: “Ja! In the ignorant Republic of The Mob, you can be charged for the deeds of your relatives. Yesterday we introduced a new mob justice system. So hands up all those who have a relative who was a member of SADF which killed people in our townships and Angola, etc. You gonna hang!!”

On Wednesday, the EFF national chair quoted Bible scripture, questioning if Floyd is responsible for Brian’s actions.

Mpofu quoted Genesis 4 verse 9 from the Old Testament: “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Responding to a question whether he had addressed the VBS scandal with the EFFs second in command, Mpofu said once the older Shivambu has been accused of any wrongdoing in the VBS scandal he would “definitely” raise the matter with Shivambu.

Mpofu tweeted: “Eish, now I’m very worried that those ‘nice’ teachers are going to punish my daughter at school this morning because, errr, her brother did not do his homework yesterday, at a different school nogal! Get it??”

Meanwhile, the EFF has remained quiet on the Shivambus’ alleged links to VBS, though the party issued a statement on Wednesday decrying the demise of the bank and recommending that criminal charges should be laid against more than 50 individuals who improperly received funds from the bank.
