On Monday night, the Mossel Bay municipality confirmed that the fire threatening houses in Friemersheim on Monday afternoon and evening was contained on all flanks.
This is according to a report by the Mossel Bay Advertiser.
The Mossel Bay and Eden District Municipality’s firefighting crews continued to monitor the fire perimeter at Friemersheim throughout the night.
By about 10pm on Monday night, the firefighters concentrated on the area, where the back burn was implemented due to the high heat in the area.
The Eden District Municipality (Eden DM) fire and rescue services received a request from the Mossel Bay fire chief to assist with the fire at about 2.30pm on Monday.
The majority of the Eden DM team members were dispatched to a fire in Still Bay, and due to this arrangement, volunteers were tasked to assist in Mossel Bay.
The Mossel Bay fire chief further requested urgent aerial assistance. The closest chopper that could be requested to assist was the one from Savannah Helicopters. The Working On Fire chopper, at Gouna, was requested as a backup.
Meanwhile in Still Bay, the teams attended to 50 hotspots on Monday, and most of these were dealt with and extinguished.
There were 11 WoF staff and two Eden DM Riversdale base staff, who would continue with mopping up on Tuesday.
These fires come as the Southern Cape picks up the pieces after fires ravaged various areas in Knysna and surrounds in early June.
