Mkhwebane’s Pretoria home vandalised – report

A brick was thrown through a glass door at the public protector's home in Pretoria.

Busisiwe Mkhwebane found her house had been vandalised upon returning from a trip on Thursday.

According to News 24, the incident comes after numerous threats after Mkhwebane made recommendations against Absa and the Reserve Bank based on the CIEX report which investigated suspected looting during the apartheid era. The investigation involved a multibillion-rand bailout of the Bankorp group, which was eventually purchased by Absa in 1992.

As part of Mkhwebane’s remedial actions, she recommended section 224 of the constitution, dealing with Sarb’s independence, be amended, which the bank says would in effect hamper its mandate to protect the value of the rand.

The High Court ruled in the Reserve Bank’s favour, finding that Mkhwebane could not amend or make recommendations to change the bank’s constitution, a move which was welcomed by Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago.
