Mbalula roasts Nando’s for ‘petty’ banner

Nando’s recently caused a storm on social media after presenter and model Maps Maponyane shared a picture of its banner at one of its restaurants on Thursday.

The banner threw shade at American fast-food chain Popeye’s Chicken, which opened right next to a Nando’s outlet, written: “Ase Mo States Mo! [this is not the States].”

Maps tweeted about the stunt, and said the banner was “so spicy”.

“We love you Maps,” the restaurant replied to Maps’ tweet from its Twitter account.

Somizi also thought it was good, while Bonang Matheba felt it was “the pettiest” and “messiest”. Apparently, these two can’t agree on anything.

And then there was Police Minister Fikile Mbalula, who thought Nando’s did not have the right to take shots at Popeye’s Chicken when South Africans were still complaining about its food prices.

The minister tweeted that the restaurant should not tell Popeye’s South Africa is not America when they have “European” prices.

“‘Ha se mo States’ with ‘[r]e mo Europe’ prices,” wrote the minister on Twitter.

He went on to criticise their buns, which he said left one looking white as if they were from Europe.

These were some of the reactions to the banner:

“Big ups to @NandosSA marketing team for never sleeping on the job!”

“Black Twitter & Nando’s same Whatsapp group spicy no chill flame grilled.”

“Popeyes must just sail on past the spicy hate.”

“Nandos are so passive aggressive.”

“I put it to you that Nandos’s marketing team comes straight outta black twitter.”

“Gotta love how they have their ear to the ground..so in touch with the streets and the lingo.”

“That moment when you realise that some other people were born with extra brain cells that you all don’t have #NandosMarketingTeam.”
