ANC MP Makhosi Khoza on Wednesday released a statement in which she explained why she had rejected SAPS and parliament protection following the death threats she received.
Khoza says she is being persecuted for speaking out against corruption and many other things that are wrong with the party, which is now different from the ANC she joined when she was 12.
“To side with the ANC of today requires me to disregard my moral fibre. I am no longer willing to be an apologist for an organisation and a leader that has lost its way,” she said.
Among other reasons, that was the reason she rejected parliament and SAPS protection offered to her.
“I cannot expect my ‘executioner’ to plead mercy for me.”
However, Police Minister Fikile Mbalula shared on social media on Wednesday he was sitting right next to Khoza when she wrote the statement, leaving most wondering what his point was.
“When honorable Dr Makhosi Khoza was writing her recent statement, I was on a plane sitting next to her,” he said to a Twitter user, who said he did see the two MPs, as he was sitting behind them.
“You are my witness,” he told the user.
Some, however, said he was lying.
“Unamanga wena [you’re lying].”
However, the minister’s statement left many wondering what was really going on, with some mocking the minister for having sat next to greatness and still not “learning” from her.
“So you witnessed what it means to be brave, to love your country, the ANC, you saw it first hand. You were not tempted to be brave too?” asked one follower.
Some argued she wrote the statement in fear of her life, referring to how Khoza recently accused the minister of “fuelling the death threats” after publicly criticising her and calling her a “suicide bomber”.
“Despite this I am now expected, after months of being ignored, to now accept security services from the very people who seek to challenge me. Based on the action of the minister and his deputy, I have little basis upon which to trust the protection that he has offered,” she said.
