In the most recent hijacking, which took place early this morning, the owner of the Highway Garden Service was shot in the leg and abdomen.

It is alleged the man was sitting in his new Hyundai H1 bakkie when a black vehicle approached with two men inside. One of the suspects got out of the vehicle and approached the man with a firearm.

According to, Warrant Officer Muzi Maphumulo, of Pinetown police, the victim resisted when the suspect demanded his car keys. Several shots where fired, and the suspects fled with the man’s vehicle as well as his gun.

The incident happened opposite the Lutheran Church at the corner of Pioneer and Janine roads.

A local resident, Shane Paulsen, said he heard about 10 to 12 ‘bangs’, and at first, he thought it was firecrackers.

“I alerted the community WhatsApp groups, and within 10 minutes, I saw ambulances going up the road. I went to check and found that the man had been hijacked and shot.”

Paulsen said the number of hijackings in the past few weeks has increased drastically, and the residents are shaken.

The victim was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
