Malema slated for ‘disrespecting’ women

The EFF leader has been criticised for his apparent continued disregard for excellence by women.

EFF leader Julius Malema found himself on the wrong side of ANC supporters after a comment about Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and President Jacob Zuma, which they said was “disrespectful”.

On Wednesday, the president proposed that the losing candidate for the ANC presidency should become deputy president at the party’s elective conferences.

“The experiences of the last two national conferences have taught us that the factionally driven ‘winner takes all’ attitude is not in the best interest of the ANC.

“It is worth repeating what I said during the opening remarks to this conference that our movement has lost many talented and capable comrades in whom it invested significantly due to slate politics, a terrible manifestation of perennial factionalism,” Zuma said in his closing remarks at the 5th national policy conference in Johannesburg.

However, according to the EFF leader, the president was only trying to keep Dlamini-Zuma in a leadership position, should another candidate win.

“Now he wants his ex to come in through the backdoor,” said Malema on Twitter, a comment that angered ANC supporters, who said he was being disrespectful. Malema was criticised for describing Dlamini-Zuma only as Zuma’s ex, as if that was the only way to describe her.

These were some of the comments he received:

“Disrespecting women is probably in your party’s constitution the way you always gaan aan… Sies vir jou!”

“You might be of a different politic but referring to someone as an ‘ex’ ain’t cool.”

“The manner in which he refers to such a prominent political figure as just an ‘ex’ who is being snuck in through a back door is disrespectful.”

“Even if you are an opposition that still does not make it normal to refer to such a figure as just a mere ex . Masingalahlekisani please.”

“You continue to have disregard for women excellence… Perhaps explains why members of your party are alleged abusers.”

Some, however, defended the EFF leader and said there was nothing wrong with pointing out that Dlamini-Zuma was the president’s ex-wife. In fact, that was the reason Zuma had been calling for a female president, they argued.
