Ithuba calls on Cape Town Lotto winner to claim R28m winnings

The winner has until February 13 to claim their money or risk forfeiting it.

Ithuba Lottery announced on Tuesday there was a South African who was unaware that they were a multimillionaire as they had not claimed their R28 million winnings. The person had until February 13 to come forward or risk forfeiting it.

“Should the ticket expire, the money will be donated to the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund to be used for charity.

“The ticket was bought at Shoprite Checkers in Sanlam Centre, Parow, in Cape Town. The player used a Quick Pick selection method, with a ticket wager of R15,” said Ithuba spokesperson Busisiwe Koloi.

The company announced last week that an R8.7 million winner from Soweto – who also took time to claim their winnings – finally came forward with his winning ticket.

“I didn’t realise that I had the winning ticket. I heard that there was a winner from Soweto – but Soweto is massive, I did not think it could be me. I checked my ticket at the retail store where I shop and I was shocked to learn that I had won the jackpot,” said the father of three.

The man, who had been unemployed for several years, said he stayed with his mother in a family home and said the first thing he planned to do with his money was to buy a house.

“Winning this Lotto jackpot has indeed uplifted my dignity. I have lost count of how many years I have been without a job. When I stopped working years ago, I used whatever money I had saved to start a loan business in the township as a means of survival. Every month I lend people money and they return it with interest. It is with this money that I had been able to take care of my family and send my children to school.

“I plan to buy a house, start a formalised business and invest a significant amount of my winnings so that I never have to worry about money again,” he said.
