Three Fidelity security officers were hospitalised after being shot.
The Johannesburg Flying Squad responded to a complaint of “cash-in-transit heist” taking place at Heidelberg Road at about 1.40pm on March 17. Police from the Johannesburg East cluster chased after the suspects who occupied a white Golf 7 GTI and a white Audi A5.
Consequently, a shootout between the parties occurred.
The Golf was recovered soon after at Golden Walk Mall, Germiston, as well as three rifles (two AK47s and an R5 rifle).
The Audi was recovered in Alberton, as well as two more AK47 rifles and a Smith and Weston pistol. All weapons were accompanied by more than enough ammunition and magazines.
Both vehicles were later reported as hijacked – the Golf was from Bronkhorstspruit and the Audi from Lyttleton.
Four suspects were arrested by the PHO Trio Task Team and the Johannesburg K9 Police Unit, but not before causing significant damage.
Three Fidelity officers were rushed to the Union hospital after sustaining shots during the turmoil.
Police are continuing with the investigation.
