Security group vows to help protect Krugersdorp journalists

Caxton Joburg West’s editorial team thanked Apcan for keeping the safety of its journalists in mind.

Apcan Armed Response recently decided they would be to help keep their local reporters safe during conflict situations.

Storm Mans, Marketing Manager at Apcan, recently handed over a bulletproof vest to the editorial team at Caxton Joburg West. Krugersdorp News editor Janine Viljoen accepted the gift on the newsroom’s behalf.

“We know that journalists often have the difficult task of trying to get the message across by capturing what happens at a crime scene or protest on camera,” Storm said.

“This sometimes puts them in dangerous situations and often in the line of fire, and we do not want that on our consciences.”

Apcan is more than just a security company. Currently, the group, which runs from its head office in Florida, has almost 10,000 houses under its protection, and in collaboration with Steve Eden from the Honour Wrestling Association, also has the ever-popular public figure Captain Ron creating awareness about kidnapping at local schools and creches.

The group also hosts the annual Apcan Skolereeks, which is a popular school rugby event. This month, they will also be present at the Hoo Hoo Festival at Trezona Park in Florida.

A heartfelt story coming from Apcan is that of Mandla Msimango. This phenomenal Apcan employee fought for his life after being involved in a fatal shootout at Blue Liquor Store on CR Swart Road on September 2, 2017. His colleague, Sabelo Kunyane, was killed in the attack by the armed perpetrators.

Caxton Joburg West’s editorial team thanked Apcan for keeping the safety of its journalists in mind, and look forward to a great working relationship with the company.
