Numerous left dead after Limpopo shootings

The police in Limpopo released a statement that condemns incidents of killings that are driven by a variety of aspects including domestic violence, liquor and others in a number of areas, Letaba Herald reports.

This condemnation follows after two separate incidents that took place in the Ritavi Policing area outside Tzaneen over the weekend.

According Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the first incident took place at about 10pm on Saturday in Lusaka Village.

In this incident, a police constable opened fire on five people, including his girlfriend and four members of her family in what is suspected to have been domestic-violence-related conflict.

The girlfriend’s father died instantly when he was shot in the head. Upon arrival at the scene, police found the constable dead with a gunshot wound and the firearm lying next to his body.

It had not yet been determined whether the constable had shot himself or had been shot by another individual. The girlfriend’s brother then died in hospital on Sunday evening, succumbing to the injuries he sustained from the shooting. The other three members of the family were still recuperating in hospital at the time of going to press.

The second incident occurred in Bridgeway Village in the early hours of the morning of Sunday.

This incident saw open fire on four men outside a tavern in the village. Two of these men died from their wounds, while two were seriously injured.

Mob justice then ensued as a group of individuals attacked and severely injured the suspect, disarming him in the process and disappearing with the firearm used to shoot the aforementioned individuals.

The surviving two men and the suspect were then taken to hospital where they placed under police protection out of fear that the community might return for him.

The ‘shooting’ suspect then died in hospital from the injuries he sustained from the attack. At the time of going to press, the motive behind the shooting was still unknown while the surviving two individuals were still in hospital and had not been identified.
